Mary Cohen, Juvenile Detention Center Summer Music Program

Our commitment to the work of underrepresented artists and engagement in music that inspires social change led us to support a collaboration inspired by Dr. Mary Cohen, a University of Iowa music education professor. Dr. Cohen directed a drumming and freestyle rapping/singing/songwriting workshop series at the Juvenile Detention Center of Linn County in collaboration with rapper Derek Thorn, singer Godwin Paintsi, percussionist Anabel (Ani) Perez-Brennan, and music educator Cecila Roudabush.

Dr. Cohen’s work is part of The International Music and Justice Inquiry Network: IMAJIN Caring Communities, a global group who meets monthly to network & share practices and research with music-making in prisons.
